How I fell in love with product management

After completing my PhD, I realized I desired a change from the academic path. Transitioning from solo work as a PhD student to a collaborative team dynamic was appealing.

I found a fulfilling role at Roche’s medical department, where I honed my teamwork skills, improved communication, and positively impacted patients, doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. Being there during the company’s transition to an agile organization was very educational.

After five years, having taken on various roles and having trained several colleagues, I felt a stagnation in growth. I aspired to delve into project-based work, preferably within a smaller company, with a focus on technology and software development, recognizing its promising future.

Finding a position as a product manager at a biotech software firm marked a turning point. Contrary to my initial expectations of exhaustion during onboarding, I found myself invigorated and happy. Engaging in diverse projects, leading teams, and contributing to the development of the SaaS platform alongside talented colleagues brought me immense satisfaction. It felt like the role was made for me and fit me like a glove.

Moving forward, I’m driven to continue expanding my expertise, making meaningful contributions to the medical and agricultural biotech sectors, and leaving a positive impact on the world.

My PhD in Bio-Medical Sciences highlights

My PhD research project was a energetic journey, from investigating the complexities of Marfan syndrome to innovating new approaches for treating aortic root dilatation, all while encouraging a culture of mentorship and collaboration.

Bio-medical PhD

Bio-medical PhD

Having secured a personal grant, I successfully completed my PhD. I researched potential medications to counter aortic root dilatation in Marfan syndrome. During my doctoral studies, I also mentored five students.

Internship at Harvard

Internship at Harvard

During my Master’s degree in bio-medical sciences, I had the valuable opportunity to intern at Harvard Medical School in Boston. This experience resulted in a scientific publication, marking a contribution to the microbiology field.

Scientific publication

Scientific publication

During my PhD studies, I conducted research on the Marfan syndrome mouse model, revealing the beneficial effects of resveratrol on aortic root growth. This discovery has prompted the initiation of a human study.

Personal grant

In 2012, I was awarded an AMC PhD Scholarship after sending in a project proposal and going through a selection process. With the support of Assistant Professor V. de Waard, I funded my own PhD project using this scholarship.

Organisational skills

Organisational skills

In 2013, I co-organised the AMC PhD association Symposium and the Interactive Immunology and Infection Retreat where PhD students from different research institutes come together to present their work to each other.

Mentoring students

Mentoring students

Throughout my doctoral studies, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring five students. By guiding them through their internships, teaching them laboratory techniques and involving them in my research, we established a win-win situation.
