Seamless data integration between Amazon S3 and IGX immune repertoire data analysis platform

In this article, we look into the process of integrating Amazon S3 data into the IGX data analysis platform, led by myself (experienced biotech product manager). Through this narrative, I aim to offer a practical view of my methods. From project inception to successful execution, I describe the strategies, teamwork, and careful planning that shape my project leadership in the biotech industry. This article offers insights into my work, helping you make informed decisions and envision the possibilities for your endeavors.

Challenge

In biotech data management, a challenge faced by users of the IGX data analysis platform was the manual data upload process required to initiate their workflows.

Project kick-off, solution, and requirements

I led a project team to automate data transfer between the IGX Platform and Amazon S3, a widely used data storage solution among our users. Our journey began with user interviews to understand customer needs and expectations. Simultaneously, our development team lead crafted a technical design document, reviewed by the entire project team.

Subsequently, I drafted the project requirements, engaging in discussions with our team to ensure alignment. Additionally, I collaborated with the development team lead to create a project plan, which was presented to the entire team. We realized the need to revamp the existing data upload workflow, splitting it into import and upload processes, so we preserved support for the current manual upload workflow. We also implemented multiple data filtering options on the overview page, data export and synchronization functionality. With a select group within the project team, including a customer support/application scientist, developer, and myself, we harmonized our vision of the product by writing a press release.

Development phase

Working closely with our UX/UI designer and the development team, we began the design and construction of this data integration solution. Regular progress meetings hosted by me kept everyone informed, facilitating discussions on challenges and addressing questions. These discussions I documented within a shared Confluence space. Meanwhile, on Jira, I collaborated with the development team lead to define the project’s design and development tasks, given the technical nature of the endeavor. Our development team and UX/UI designer conducted demonstrations during meetings, soliciting feedback and refining the solution. All the work was reviewed and tested by me and at least one more project team member.

Stijntje has a keen eye for detail and always ensured that every aspect of the product development process was carefully planned and executed. She also has excellent communication skills, and was able to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure product success.

Successful launch

As we neared the project’s culmination, I compiled a factsheet, highlighting unique selling points, and discussed the marketing strategy with our team. Following internal testing and quality assurance assessments by me and the project team, the feature was rolled out to select customers for beta testing. Witnessing the transition from manual data uploads to immediate data accessibility was rewarding, both for our team and our customers who embraced this transformative solution.
